The Rozell lab attempts to determine the computation goals of sensory systems (e.g., the visual system) as they process information from the environment. They draw on ideas from engineering and mathematics (especially signal processing and machine learning) to postulate optimal architectures for neural systems, then seek evidence of these approaches in neural structures. A particular focus has been on how neural systems extract low-dimensional information from high-dimensional signals. This “top-down” approach contrasts and complements the typical “bottom-up” approach of building system models from knowledge of lower-level components.
