Using a combination of computational and experimental techniques in neurophysiology and biomechanics, the Ting Group (located on the Georgia Tech campus) is leading the nascent field of neuromechanics, deciphering the hidden organization underlying standing and walking. They have created new conceptual frameworks for understanding the muscle activation patterns arising from the neural and musculoskeletal systems of both humans and animals. They have identified commonalities in and difference between individuals in motor variability and in the optimizing principles that shape the adaptation of sensorimotor feedback generating muscle activity patterns in motor learning and motor deficit. These analyses have implications for the study of neural computation and in studying and addressing the impaired motor function of stroke patients.
